Remine Water, presented at the LIFE Brine-Mining Online Workshop on Evaporation Technologies

On March 10th 2022, an online workshop organized by the LIFE Brine-Mining project was held. During the event, several European projects promoting fresh ideas on wastewater treatment and water purification were presented.

Claudia Pastor Morell, project manager at Cetaqua Barcelona, presented the European project LIFE Remine Water, which is based in a minimum liquid discharge and by-product recovery in the mining industry.

Over 30 people attended the workshop, including representatives of European projects, companies in the water and waste management field such as Veolia or THERMOSSOL, institutes, members of the Brine-Mining consortium and students from NTUA.

Evaporators are one of the most important compartments for a Zero Liquid Discharge System, but their construction comes along with many difficulties and challenges, and the high-energy consumption is the top of them.  Companies and research institutes are working on brine concentration technologies, which allow the reduction of the brine volume and thus the total associated costs when it is derived to an evaporator.

Specifically, LIFE Remine Water deploys an innovative solution for brine concentration in mining sector which will allow to minimize the volume of acid mine drainage (AMD) effluents and produce suitable water to be reused. Additionally, the use of renewable energies such as solar-thermal systems to reduce the carbon footprint and OPEX associated to evaporation will be assessed.
